Polaroid SX-70 Sonar, Black

310.00

1978, USA

Introduced six years after the release of the SX-70 Original, the SX-70 Sonar features a sonar auto-focusing system who's speed and accuracy is still shocking decades later.  This auto-focus system can be disabled with the flick of a switch, which allows the camera to be manually focused. The SX-70 Sonar happens to be our favorite SX-70 model here at Brooklyn Film Camera. Their design is gorgeous and the speed and accuracy of the sonar auto-focus system allows you to take great candid photos in addition to more considered manually-focused photographs.

The SX-70 was the worlds first folding SLR camera ever engineered *and* the world's first instant camera to use integral film.  Prior to the innovation of integral film, instant film development had to be carefully timed, the positive and negative manually separated, a coating of chemistry would sometimes need to be spread over the positive, and prints would take several minutes to dry.  The SX-70 revolutionized upon these previous instant film drawbacks by utilizing a film that was self-contained and required absolutely no action to be taken by the photographer after clicking the shutter: The film would automatically eject, develop, and would be dry to the touch from beginning to end. This innovation was nothing short of absolute *magic* to the eyes of the public when it was released in 1972. Imagine - in the age of darkrooms and film labs - when it was typical to have to wait days to see your pictures, being able to skip all of that entirely and see an image completely develop in your hands within minutes! We find something interesting… Almost 50 years later, SX-70 photography still holds this magic as potently as ever.

SX-70's are top of the line Polaroids, featuring a strong metal body, a tack sharp 116mm f/8 lens, a short 10.4 inch minimum focal distance, a shutter speed range from 1/175s to 10-seconds, an exposure control wheel, and fully manual focus.  This camera was a mastery of engineering, made the most beautiful instant-images of it's time, and remains notorious and widely used today because of these properties.

Our SX-70's have been completely restored in-house, are fitted with fresh new leather coverings, and come with a comprehensive 1-year warranty.
